How do I make an audio file smaller?
Lower the bitrate and, for speech, switch to mono. At 64 kbps mono, voice notes, lectures and podcasts stay clear while taking about 0.5 MB per minute. Music needs more: 96–128 kbps stereo is a sensible minimum.
Files are saved as MP3 or M4A and compressed in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
| Bitrate | Per minute | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 32 kbps | 0.24 MB | Very small voice notes |
| 64 kbps | 0.48 MB | Speech, podcasts |
| 128 kbps | 0.96 MB | Music |

Questions
What bitrate should I use for a podcast?
64 kbps mono for speech-only shows, 96–128 kbps stereo if there's music.
Does mono make the file smaller?
Not by itself: the size depends on the bitrate. Mono spends the whole bitrate on one channel, so speech sounds clearer at low bitrates like 32–64 kbps. That lets you choose a lower bitrate for the same quality.
