Why convert AVIF to JPG?

AVIF is a modern image format that's much smaller than JPG, so many websites now serve it. But some apps, photo editors, printers and upload forms still don't accept it. Converting to JPG gives you a file that opens everywhere.

Transparent areas are filled with white unless you pick another colour, because JPG can't store transparency. Everything happens in your browser, so your images are never uploaded.

Questions

Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF compresses much better than JPG, so the same picture takes more space as a JPG. That's the trade-off for opening everywhere.

Does my browser need to support AVIF?

It needs to open AVIF, which Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or newer all do.

Is there a quality loss?

Very little at the default quality. Choose a higher quality for printing.
