How does image to text work?

Optical character recognition (OCR) finds letters in an image and turns them into text you can copy. Add a screenshot, photo or scan, choose the language, and the text appears in an editable box.

Recognition runs in your browser using Tesseract, so your image isn't uploaded. The first time, the reader and language data (about 5–15 MB) download from a public CDN. Clear, straight, well-lit text gives the best results.

How it works

  1. Add an image

A screenshot, photo or scanned page.

  2. Choose the language

    English is selected by default.

  3. Copy the text

Edit it if needed, then copy or download it.

Questions

Can it read handwriting?

Neat handwriting sometimes works, but results are much better with printed text.

Which languages are supported?

English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Indonesian, Malay, Bengali, Hindi, Arabic, simplified Chinese and Japanese.

Why are some words wrong?

Blur, low contrast and unusual fonts cause mistakes. Crop to just the text and use a sharper image.
