How random are these passwords?
Each character is picked with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), the same source used for encryption keys. The password is created on your device and is never sent to us or saved, so nobody else ever sees it.
Length matters more than anything else. A 16-character password using upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols has about 103 bits of strength, far beyond what can be guessed. Use a different password for every account and keep them in a password manager.
| Length | Strength | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 52 bits | Weak for important accounts |
| 12 | 77 bits | Strong |
| 16 | 103 bits | Very strong |
| 24 | 155 bits | Excellent |

Questions
Is it safe to generate a password online?
With this tool, yes: the password is created by your own browser and never leaves your device. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
How long should my password be?
At least 12 characters, and 16 or more for email, banking and your password manager.
What does avoid look-alike characters do?
It leaves out characters that are easy to confuse, such as l, I, 1, O and 0, which helps if you need to type the password by hand.
Do you store the passwords?
No. Nothing is saved or sent. Closing the page erases them.
