What is an image's dominant colour?

The dominant colour is the colour that covers the largest part of an image. It's different from the average colour, which mixes every pixel together and often looks muddy. Designers use the dominant colour for matching backgrounds, loading placeholders, text overlays and brand accents.

This tool groups similar pixels together to find the dominant colour, then shows the average colour and the next most common shades, with codes you can copy. Everything happens in your browser, so your images are never uploaded.

Questions

What's the difference between dominant and average colour?

Dominant is the most common colour group in the image. Average blends every pixel, so a photo of a red flower on green leaves might average to brown even though neither colour is brown.

Can I get a full colour palette?

Yes. Our image to palette tool extracts up to 12 colours and exports them for CSS, Tailwind and design apps.

Are transparent areas counted?

No. Fully transparent pixels are ignored, so logos on transparent backgrounds give their real colour.
