Image DPI checker

Check the DPI (resolution) saved in an image, see how large it will print, and change the DPI without touching the pixels.

What is image DPI?

DPI (dots per inch), also called PPI (pixels per inch), tells printers and design apps how large to print an image. It doesn't change the pixels. A 3000 × 2000 pixel photo set to 300 DPI prints at 10 × 6.67 inches, and at 72 DPI the same photo is labelled 41.7 × 27.8 inches.

This tool shows the DPI stored in JPG, PNG, WebP and TIFF files, the print size at that DPI, and how large the image can print at good quality (300 DPI). You can also change the DPI of JPG and PNG files to 72, 150, 300 or any value, without re-compressing them. Everything happens in your browser, so your images are never uploaded.

How it works

  1. Add images

Select, drop or paste JPG, PNG, WebP or TIFF images.

  2. Check DPI and print size

See the saved DPI and the print size in inches and centimetres.

  3. Change DPI if needed

Pick a new DPI and download. The pixels stay exactly the same.

Questions

What DPI do I need for printing?

300 DPI is the standard for sharp photo prints, books and brochures. 150 DPI is fine for posters viewed from a distance. Screens ignore DPI.

Does changing DPI reduce quality?

No. Changing DPI only edits a label inside the file. The pixels aren't changed, so the image looks the same on screen.

Why does my image say 72 DPI?

72 or 96 DPI is a common default for images made on computers and phones. It doesn't mean the image is low quality. What matters for printing is the pixel size.

Why doesn't my image have a DPI?

Some files don't store one. Most apps then assume 72 or 96 DPI. You can add one with the change DPI option.

How big can I print my photo?

Divide the width and height in pixels by 300 to get inches at good quality. For example, 3600 × 2400 pixels prints at 12 × 8 inches.

How do I check the DPI of an image online?

Drop the image above. The DPI saved in the file appears straight away, with the print size it gives in inches and centimetres and the largest size it can print at 300 DPI.

Can I check the DPI of a PDF?

A PDF doesn't have one DPI: each image inside it can differ. Save the page as an image with PDF to JPG at 300 DPI, then check or print that image.

How many KB is a 300 DPI image?

DPI doesn't change the file size. The size in KB depends on the pixels and compression, so a 300 DPI photo can be 50 KB or 5 MB. To meet a KB limit, compress to the KB size first, then set 300 DPI, because compressing saves a fresh file without the DPI setting.
