Which barcode type should I use?

EAN-13 is the 13-digit barcode on retail products around the world, and UPC-A is the 12-digit version used in the US and Canada. Type the number without its last digit and the check digit is worked out for you; type all the digits and it's checked. Code 128 can hold letters, numbers and symbols, so it suits shipping labels, stock and inventory codes, library cards and asset tags.

Download a PNG for documents and printing, or an SVG, which stays perfectly sharp at any size, for labels and packaging design. Barcode numbers for products sold in shops must be registered with GS1 in your country. Everything happens in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to our server.

Questions

Is this barcode generator free?

Yes, with no sign-up, watermark or limit.

Do I need to calculate the check digit?

No. Type 12 digits for EAN-13 or 11 for UPC-A and the last digit is added. If you type the full number, it's checked.

Can I make my own product barcode?

You can make the image, but numbers for products sold in shops must come from GS1 so they're unique worldwide.

Will my barcode scan?

Yes, if it's printed dark on white, large enough, and with the white space left on both sides. Test it with your phone's camera or a scanner.

Can I make a QR code instead?

Yes, use the QR code generator for links, Wi-Fi and contact cards.
