What is an ICO file?

An ICO file holds the same icon in several sizes, so Windows and browsers can pick the sharpest one. Add an image, choose the sizes to include, and download the .ico. Non-square images are centred on a transparent square.

For a complete website icon set with Apple and Android icons too, use the favicon generator. Everything happens in your browser, so your files are never uploaded.

How it works

  1. Add an image

A square PNG or SVG works best.

  2. Choose the sizes

16, 32 and 48 are used by browsers.

  3. Download the ICO

One file with every size inside.

Questions

Which sizes should a favicon.ico contain?

16, 32 and 48 pixels.

Which sizes do Windows icons need?

16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels cover most uses.

How do I convert an image to ICO?

Add a PNG, JPG or SVG, tick the sizes you need (16, 32 and 48 for a favicon) and download one .ico file that contains every size.

Can I convert a photo to an icon?

Yes. Crop the photo to a square first so the subject fills the icon, then convert it. Small sizes like 16 × 16 show very little detail, so a close-up works best.

Does converting to ICO lose quality?

Each size is resized from your original, so start with an image at least 256 × 256 pixels. Smaller sources look soft in the large sizes.

What's the difference between ICO and PNG favicons?

An ICO holds several sizes in one file and works in every browser, including old ones. Modern browsers also accept PNG favicons. The favicon generator makes both.
