Convert JPG to AVIF

Turn JPG and PNG images into AVIF, the most efficient web image format. Works in every browser, even ones that can't save AVIF themselves.

Your images never leave this device. Everything runs in your browser.

Why use AVIF?

AVIF usually makes photos far smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, which means faster web pages and less data on phones. Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+ all display AVIF, so it's safe for websites. Keep a JPG copy for email and older apps.

Most browsers can't save AVIF on their own, so this tool uses libavif, the reference AVIF encoder, compiled to WebAssembly. Encoding is slower than JPG: a 12-megapixel photo can take several seconds. Everything happens in your browser, so your images are never uploaded.

How it works

  1. Add images

JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC, up to 50.

  2. Convert to AVIF

Lower the quality for even smaller files.

  3. Download

Save each AVIF, or a ZIP of all of them.

Questions

Is AVIF better than WebP?

AVIF is usually smaller than WebP at the same quality, but slower to create. Both work in all current browsers.

Why is converting to AVIF slow?

AVIF compression is much more complex than JPG. Large photos take a few seconds each; batches run one after another.

Does AVIF keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent PNGs stay transparent as AVIF.

Can I put AVIF images on my website?

Yes. All current browsers show them. For very old browsers, use a <picture> element with a JPG fallback.
