How to check an image's size in pixels
Updated 21 October 2026
Tool for this guide: Dimensions checker
Short answer: drop the image into the image dimensions checker. It shows the width and height in pixels (for example 1920 × 1080), the aspect ratio, megapixels, orientation and file size. Add as many images as you like and export a CSV.
Dimensions vs file size
| Term | Means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | Width × height in pixels | 4000 × 3000 |
| Megapixels | Width × height ÷ 1,000,000 | 12 MP |
| Aspect ratio | The shape, width:height | 4:3 |
| File size | Storage used | 2.4 MB |
| DPI | Print density setting | 72 or 300 |
A large image can have a small file size if it's well compressed, and the other way round.
Step by step
- Open the image dimensions checker.
- Select, drop or paste one or more images.
- Read the sizes, copy one in a click, or download all results as a CSV.
It reads the size the way the image is displayed, so phone photos stored sideways are reported the right way round. Nothing is uploaded.
Other ways to check
- Windows: right-click the file → Properties → Details.
- Mac: open in Preview → Tools → Show Inspector, or select it in Finder and press Space.
- iPhone: open the photo in Photos and swipe up.
- Android: open in Google Photos and swipe up or tap ⓘ.
What to do with the numbers
- Too big for a website? Resize and compress.
- Wrong shape? Find the right size with the aspect ratio calculator.
- Printing? Check sharpness with the DPI checker.
Questions
How many megapixels is my photo?
Multiply the width by the height and divide by one million. A 4000 × 3000 photo is 12 megapixels.
Can I check many images at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like and download the results as a CSV spreadsheet.
