How big should a QR code be when printed?

Tool for this guide: QR code generator

A common rule of thumb is to make a QR code at least 2 × 2 cm (about 0.8 × 0.8 in) and about one tenth of the distance people will scan it from. A poster read from 2 metres away needs a code around 20 cm wide. These are guides, not guarantees, so always test a printed sample with a few phones.

Size by scanning distance (rule of thumb)

Scanning distanceMinimum code width
20 cm (business card, packaging)2 cm
50 cm (flyer, menu)5 cm
1 m (counter sign)10 cm
2 m (poster)20 cm
5 m (banner)50 cm

Things that make QR codes harder to scan

Error correction

Error correction lets a code still scan when part of it is damaged or dirty. Medium (15%) suits most uses. Choose High (30%) for codes that may get scratched, such as on packaging or outdoor signs, and print them a little larger, since they're denser.

PNG or SVG for print?

Download SVG for print. It's a vector file, so it stays sharp at any size. PNG works well for screens and documents; use the largest size (2048 px) if you print it.

Test before printing

  1. Print one copy at the final size.
  2. Scan it with at least two different phones, from the distance people will use.
  3. Check it opens the right page.
