How to convert PDF to Excel (and Excel to PDF)
Updated 23 October 2026
Tool for this guide: PDF to Excel
Short answer: open PDF to Excel, add the PDF and click Convert to Excel. Tables come out in rows and columns, and amounts like 1,234.50 become real numbers you can add up. To go the other way, use Excel to PDF.
What converts well
| Result | |
|---|---|
| Invoices, receipts, price lists | Very good: clean columns |
| Bank and card statements | Good: dates, descriptions and amounts in columns |
| Reports with tables | Good; text paragraphs go in the first column |
| Scanned pages (photos) | No text to read; see below |
Step by step: PDF to Excel
- Open PDF to Excel and add the PDF.
- Choose All pages in one sheet or One sheet per page.
- Keep Turn amounts into numbers ticked so totals work.
- Convert and open the .xlsx in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.
Numbers are cleaned up for you: 1,234.50 becomes 1234.5, (75.00) becomes −75 and 12% becomes 0.12. Codes with leading zeros, such as 00123, stay as text.
Step by step: Excel to PDF
- Open Excel to PDF and add an .xlsx or .csv file.
- Tick the sheets you want and choose Landscape for wide sheets.
- Tick First row is a header for bold column titles.
- Convert and download.
Both run in your browser, so statements and invoices stay on your device.
Scanned PDFs
Scans are pictures of text. Save the pages with PDF to JPG, read them with image to text (OCR), and paste the result into Excel.
