Tool for this guide: Screen recorder
Short answer: open the screen recorder, tick the sound options you want, press Start recording and choose your whole screen, one window or a browser tab. Press Stop and save, then download the video. No app, no watermark, no time limit.
What can be recorded
| Option | Records |
|---|---|
| Entire screen | Everything you see |
| Window | One app window |
| Browser tab | A single tab, the most reliable way to capture its sound |
| Record my microphone | Your voice, for narration |
| Record sound from the tab | Video or meeting audio (Chrome and Edge) |
Step by step
- Open the screen recorder.
- Choose sound options: microphone and tab or screen audio.
- Press Start recording and pick what to share.
- Press Stop and save, or stop sharing from the browser's own bar.
- Download the video.
Chrome, Edge and Safari save MP4. Firefox saves WebM, which you can turn into MP4 with one click. Recordings stay on your device.
Tips for a good recording
- Close notifications and unrelated tabs before you start.
- Share a tab rather than the whole screen when recording a video or meeting, so its sound is captured.
- Use a headset microphone to avoid echo.
- Do a 10-second test to check the sound.
After recording
- Cut the start and end: trim video.
- Make it smaller to email or upload: compress video.
- Speed up slow parts: video speed.
- Add subtitles or notes: video to text.
Questions
Why isn't the sound from my computer recorded?
Browsers can only capture audio from a tab, or the whole screen on Windows with Chrome or Edge. Tick the tab sound option and share a tab.
Can I record on my phone?
Phones don't let websites record the screen. Use the built-in recorder in your phone's control centre or quick settings, then trim or compress the video here.
