Tool for this guide: QR code scanner
Short answer: open the QR code scanner and press Scan with camera, or add a photo or screenshot of the code. The link, text, Wi-Fi password or contact inside is shown before anything opens.
Ways to scan
| Where the code is | How |
|---|---|
| In front of you | Scan with camera on your phone or laptop |
| In a screenshot or photo | Add the image to the scanner |
| On your phone screen (in an app or email) | Take a screenshot, then add it |
| iPhone | The Camera app reads QR codes too: point it at the code |
| Android | Google Lens or the camera's QR mode also work |
Step by step
- Open the QR code scanner.
- Press Scan with camera and allow access, or choose an image.
- Read what's inside, then Copy it or Open link.
It also reads barcodes such as EAN-13, UPC-A and Code 128. The camera feed and images stay on your device.
Stay safe with QR codes
Fake QR stickers on parking meters, posters and payment signs are a common scam. Before opening a link:
- Read the address. Is it the real company's website, spelled correctly?
- Be careful with payment and login pages reached from a QR code.
- Check for stickers placed over the original code.
The scanner never opens links automatically, so you always see the address first.
