How to speed up or slow down a video
Updated 21 October 2026
Tool for this guide: Change video speed
Short answer: open video speed, add the video, choose a speed from 0.25× (slow motion) to 4× (fast forward) and press Change speed. Voices keep their normal pitch, or you can remove the sound.
How long will it be?
| Speed | A 1-minute clip becomes |
|---|---|
| 0.25× | 4 minutes |
| 0.5× | 2 minutes |
| 1.5× | 40 seconds |
| 2× | 30 seconds |
| 4× | 15 seconds |
Step by step
- Open video speed and add an MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM or other video.
- Choose a speed.
- Keep the sound (pitch-corrected) or remove it.
- Download the new MP4.
It runs in your browser with ffmpeg, so your video is never uploaded. Files up to about 120 MB work best.
Good uses
- Tutorials and screen recordings: 1.5× or 2× cuts waiting time. Record with the screen recorder.
- Sports and action: 0.5× slow motion shows the movement.
- Timelapses: 4×, then run the result through again for 16×.
- Fitting a time limit: speed a clip slightly so it fits a 60-second post.
Tips for smooth slow motion
Slow motion shows the same frames for longer, so very slow speeds can look choppy. Videos filmed at 60 frames per second or more look much smoother slowed down. Many phones have a slow-mo mode that records at 120 or 240 fps.
Questions
Do voices sound like chipmunks at 2×?
No. The pitch is kept, so speech just sounds faster.
How do I speed up only part of a video?
Trim out the part, change its speed, then merge the pieces.
Try it now
